Students from various schools across WA departed from Perth during the summer school holidays on an unforgettable educational journey. From the warm welcomes of their host families to exploring Japan’s modern and traditional culture, every moment in Tokyo was filled with discovery.
Through a local school visit and homestay program, students were able to expand their global perspectives and deepen their appreciation for Japan beyond pop culture.
Day 1 – 2: Perth to Tokyo
Before checking into their hotel, the students visited the Toyosu area in Tokyo. They enjoyed shopping and lunch at the large commercial complex Lalaport Toyosu, followed by a visit to the popular digital art museum teamLab Planets. There, they were immersed in an interactive experience featuring cutting-edge projection mapping technology, which left a strong impression on everyone.

TeamLab Planets in Toyosu is a one-of-a-kind immersive digital art museum that blends technology, nature, and art. Featuring interactive exhibits like glowing koi ponds, infinite light installations, and floating flower gardens, visitors can walk barefoot through water-filled spaces and become part of the artwork. Located near Shin-Toyosu Station, the museum offers a surreal, sensory experience for students.
Day 3: Tokyo & Yokohama Adventure
The day began with a visit to Shibuya, one of the most iconic neighborhoods in Japan. Students took commemorative photos at the statue of Hachiko, the world’s most famous dog, and experienced the famous Shibuya Scramble Crossing — known as the busiest pedestrian intersection in the world. They also enjoyed lunch together in the heart of this vibrant district.
In the afternoon, the group traveled to Yokohama. They arrived at Ishikawacho Station and visited the Yokohama Daska Museum, followed by a scenic walk through Yamashita Park to the Red Brick Warehouse. For dinner, they enjoyed Chinese cuisine at a local favorite — Gyoza no Ohsho. In the evening, they returned to Tokyo via Sakuragicho and Shinkiba Stations, stopping to buy breakfast for the next day. It was a full and memorable day exploring both Tokyo and Yokohama.
Day 4: Minato City Tokyo
The students visited a local school located in Minato City, one of the most popular and prestigious areas in Japan, offering a valuable opportunity for international exchange. Upon arrival, they were warmly welcomed by the school’s teachers and students, immediately surrounded by smiles and a friendly atmosphere.
Through classes and interactive activities, the students exchanged ideas about their respective cultures, values, and school lives. Despite language differences, they found meaningful ways to connect, learning from each other and gaining new perspectives. The respectful and kind nature of the Japanese students left a lasting impression, and the short time spent together became a deeply fulfilling moment of cross-cultural understanding and budding international friendship.

Day 5 – 7: Homestay Experience in Minato City, Tokyo
The students visited a local school located in Minato City, one of the most popular and prestigious areas in Japan, offering a valuable opportunity for international exchange. Upon arrival, they were warmly welcomed by the school’s teachers and students, immediately surrounded by smiles and a friendly atmosphere.

Day 8: Journey to Hakone
The students checked out of their hotel in Tokyo and boarded a private coach bound for the scenic mountain town of Hakone. Upon arriving at Hakone-Yumoto Station, they had time to enjoy lunch at their leisure, followed by a relaxing period of free time to explore the charming streets and shops of this historic hot spring town.
In the afternoon, the group continued on to the Honma Yosegi Museum, a place dedicated to the traditional Japanese art of parquetry. There, the students participated in a hands-on workshop, creating their own unique pieces using the intricate wooden mosaic techniques that Hakone is famous for.
After the enriching cultural experience, the students boarded the bus once more and made their way to the hotel, where they would unwind and reflect on a day filled with creativity, craftsmanship, and discovery.
Day 9: Hakone
The day began with a special journey through Hakone, a region where art and nature blend in perfect harmony. The students departed from their hotel in the morning and made their way—by bus and on foot—to their first destination: the Hakone Open-Air Museum. Surrounded by vast open spaces and greenery, they explored a wide range of modern sculptures. One of the highlights was the Picasso Pavilion, where vibrant and uniquely shaped works sparked their creativity and curiosity.
Next, the students boarded the Hakone Tozan Railway followed by a cable car to reach the mountaintop area of Sounzan. As they ascended, stunning views of Hakone’s natural landscape unfolded before them, making the journey itself a memorable experience. Upon arrival, they enjoyed lunch at their own pace while taking in the crisp mountain air and volcanic surroundings.
In the afternoon, the group traveled by local bus to Togendai Station, where panoramic views of Lake Ashi and the surrounding mountains awaited them. The breathtaking scenery had students eagerly reaching for their cameras to capture the moment.
Their next adventure took place on the water, as they boarded the iconic Hakone “pirate ship” for a cruise across Lake Ashi. With cool breezes and majestic landscapes all around, the experience offered a refreshing change of pace and left a lasting impression. After disembarking at Moto-Hakone Port, the group returned by bus to the Onsenba Iriguchi area and walked back to the hotel. As the evening settled in, the students enjoyed a relaxing dinner and reflected on a day filled with culture, nature, and unforgettable views.
Day 10: Hakone & Tokyo
The students bid farewell to the breathtaking natural landscapes of Hakone and returned to Tokyo for the final day of their journey. Their first stop was Asakusa, a historic district rich in tradition and culture. Passing through the iconic Kaminarimon Gate, they explored Nakamise Street, where they enjoyed browsing traditional souvenirs and sampling classic Japanese sweets. It was a meaningful moment to experience the timeless charm of old Tokyo.
Next, they headed to Harajuku, the vibrant center of youth culture and fashion. On the bustling Takeshita Street, students immersed themselves in the colorful atmosphere, discovering trendy shops and popular treats. The contrast between the tradition of Asakusa and the cutting-edge energy of Harajuku offered a well-rounded view of Tokyo’s diversity.
As the day came to a close, the group made their way to the airport. There, a heartwarming surprise awaited them—two host families had come all the way to the airport just to say goodbye to the students they had welcomed into their homes. The emotional reunion was filled with smiles, hugs, and silent connections that spoke louder than words.
Despite the short time spent together, it was clear that strong bonds of trust and warmth had formed. The heartfelt goodbyes served as a powerful reminder of the deep connections built through this cultural exchange—true bridges between Japan and Australia. As they parted with words like “See you again,” the students carried with them not just memories, but friendships and hope that transcended borders.
With smiles tinged with a hint of sadness, the students reflected on the unforgettable experiences and relationships they had formed throughout their time in Japan. This journey, filled with discovery, connection, and personal growth, will surely remain a cherished memory and a source of inspiration for years to come.
